Job Interviews: How to stand out above the rest.
- Learn all you can about the company. Wow them with what you know.
- Be yourself. Highlight your strengths and work on your weaknesses.
- Don’t jibber jabber. There may be gaps during the interview but this is better than filling in those gaps with nervous chatter that only reveals your insecurity and takes away from your professionalism.
- Ask questions. You’re interviewing them too. But keep your questions to pertinent ones. Don’t ask questions that are petty and unimportant. This lends the impression that you are nit picky and did not prepare for your interview.
- Have what you are going to say prepared. Be sure your resume and bio is well written and know it well. These words should be used as a guide (a blueprint) to help you stay on the right path as you are being interviewed. Having said this, be sure that you do not lie on your resume and bio. Be honest from the beginning to the end.
- Don’t waste time. In this economy, many others are standing in line for the same job. Stay on topic, ask questions that are relevant, and directly answer the questions that are asked of you.
- Don’t be picky. You want to portray confidence but not arrogance. Trying too hard can be counterproductive.
- Do not appear as a negative person and one who does not think outside the box. If asked to do something that you might normally say “no” to, be open minded and consider broadening your horizons.
- Wear comfortable clothing and do a trial run in your apparel. Don’t let the interview appointment be the time to discover that the shoes you have selected are uncomfortable and the power suit is a a polyester sauna room that you have donned.
- Select any jokes you want to throw in carefully and sparingly.
- Above all else, be yourself and come prepared. Highlight your strengths. Work on your weaknesses. Have the right words to say and use them as a guide to keep you on the professional path.
