Networking: How to make your profile work for you

What’s all this stuff about celebritizing you and profile makeovers? Well, we live in the age of technology and as the economy crisis continues, brick and mortar buildings go down and websites and networking groups go up.

You use the Internet to provide and obtain products and services, donate, entertain, inform, and educate  so your LinkedIn profile (amongst other profiles) and digital presence is increasingly growing in importance. Why do you think people are turning to networking in such a huge way? Think about it, one person is signing up at LinkedIn.com every second. Wow!

Here are some reasons why networking is growing at lightning speed:

- It is an extended version of your website and business card

- The ability to express yourself

- Connecting to others locally and globally

- Connecting with people you may typically do not get a chance to ever talk to

- A form of communication via the Internet, the fastest and least expensive way to advertise

- More job postings are listed online

- Profiles and resumes are increasingly being posted online

- Higher prices lead to staying home more, which shopping, entertainment, and education is done online

- Networking sites come in many formats, allowing users to be able to add profiles, photos, blogs, articles, classified ads, upload videos, and even join phone networking events (see BlitzTime for one-on-one phone networking).

- Joining different interest groups adds to your job experience credentials

I truly believe that the number one reason we are turning to the Internet and networking is that jobs are at an all-time low. This is why business networking and the need for a complete profile is at an all-time rise.

Two million people in the USA have lost their jobs since March 2009. This brings the total up to 5.1 million people having lost their jobs since the beginning of 2008, reports CNN Money.

By networking with others, you can reach your goals faster. There is only so much time and energy in which an individual has to accomplish goals. With being online whether you have a website, are networking, posting a blog, or simply asking a question online having a digital presence is the way our world is going.

Having the proper digital presence, that is!

Although going online and networking is so popular, people still do not understand it. I’m still learning every day!

The biggest problem is that most people begin with the first impression – their profile – that is incomplete or even nonexistent. Having a profile that truly reveals the personable and professional you is the first impression that you send out to the world. (Don’t believe me? Take a look at some LinkedIn profiles or Facebook profiles and compare for yourself.) Even what you put on craiglist helps make or break the sale.

Four seconds. That’s the approximate time you have to capture a visitor’s attention online, inform, and persuade him/her to take action. How can you stand out above the billions of people and websites? What makes them grab on and hold? How do you turn visitors into conversions? Now you have to target the search engines. But how?

By having a complete profile that reveals the whole YOU and a digital presence that delivers the message that you want to portray to the world, one that also includes key words and phrases and reverse key words and phrases. These will help get you to the people who are already looking for you at Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

Many people don’t even have a profile. They just have their names, titles, and company’s name listed. Some just take a guess when creating their profiles. 35% of people in the United States have their profiles on networking sites. That’s ONE THIRD of the population.

PR-USA reports that half of these people admit to being embarrassed by their profiles. Profiles that are not carefully and completely created can have a negative impact. Protect your online reputation, folks!

Why take the risk with an embarrassing or incomplete profile? If you’re going to be networking, if you’re going to be online, then MAKE IT COUNT.
