How to write an informative essay geared toward business professionals
An informative essay should have a specific purpose. It should focus on a particular topic and provide detailed information and knowledge on that very subject. This is yet another reason why the writer should know who his/her specific audience will be, which will also help determine which topic is the best based on the audience and the areas that the student/writer has much knowledge and interest in. If the selected topic is not interesting to the audience and/or the writer is not well informed in the subject then the information cannot be presented in a way that will keep the interest of the readers. Information that is new and useful to the audience will keep them engaged and want to continue reading. Readers want something that they can use and information that will give them food for thought. A brief explanation of the topic that he/she has selected should be explained and relevant information from research should be included to support the writing. Without a purpose and supporting research and information, an informative essay will not be informative. It will also lose the interest of the readers as the writer may jump from topic to topic (taking the audience on a wild goose chase of deciding what on earth this writing is supposed to be about) and may not have supporting material, which is crucial in making the writing informative.
Informational writing should have a focus
Using an active voice in an informative writing will produce a strong essay. Add proper emphasis to the essay and supporting information by including words that are active and powerful. Although sing-song poetic descriptions are not beneficial with this type of writing, selecting descriptive adjectives that will really emphasize what is being stated in the informative essay will add interest, support, and drive the point home. Replacing general words such as “okay” and “good” with synonyms that are more expressive will do the job of adding oomph and will keep the readers engaged. The writing will also be more professional as the specific audience comprises of business professionals. Remember to focus on your specific audience and select the words that will deliver the tone that is needed to deliver the selected topic. Just like a speaker should not sound monotone or use words that are too general and bland, the writer should select words that add some spice and support the topic he/she has chosen. Informative writing is used every day. When a story is told by someone, he/she uses his/her own voice and tone adds his/her own twist and most likely does so without giving this a second thought. This is how an informative essay geared to a specific audience should be. Business professionals want information that is useful but they do not want to be bored when reading this information nor do they want to gather their information through poetic prose. It is balance that the writer strives for.
For an informative essay, the point of view will usually be in third person. Also known as the third-person objective point of view, writing in third person adds sophistication which an expert in the area of selected topic should use. When writing in third person do not use pronouns such as “I” or “we”. Instead, select pronouns such as “he”, “she”, “they”, or “one”. This assists in keeping the informative essay free from bias and presents information in an effective manner that is not laden with opinions or sounds opinionated. The third person point of view is crucial when writing to inform business professionals who are not focused on opinions but want information that is factual and supported by much research.
Finally, it is important that the writer writes in a way that will explain his/her topic and its importance within the conditions in which it exists or occurs. This will keep the writing focused and flowing. Relaying the topic in an informative manner will give the specific audience, which is business professionals in this case, something new that they can learn and use within the appropriate context of the readers who are professionals within businesses.
